California State PTA Honored with National Award

California State PTA honored with national award for outstanding advocacy efforts

Promoting meaningful parent involvement in education funding decisions
ARLINGTON, VA. – National PTA honored California State PTA  with its Outstanding State Advocacy Award for ensuring parents are part of school budget and decision-making processes.
California State PTA’s support for changes in how schools are funded and how parents are involved helped contribute to the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) law passed by the California State Legislature and signed by the governor in 2013. Following the passage of the new law, California State PTA made it a priority to raise awareness among all parents about the new law and the opportunity for parents to participate in development of their school districts’ Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPs). These efforts included a wide range of resources, videos and trainings in multiple languages for parents and school leaders, as well as the development of a California-specific version of the PTA National Standards for Family-School Partnerships Assessment Guide. PTA leaders also testified before the State Board of Education regarding proposed regulations.
The most sweeping change in school funding in decades, the LCFF incorporated many of the systematic proposals sought by California State PTA, including:

• Allowing for more local decisions on how funds are spent
• Requiring parent and community involvement in funding decisions
• Targeting funds toward students most in need, and
• Calling for greater transparency and accountability for how money is spent.

“PTA has been working hard to educate all parents and families about the new school funding law, their increased responsibility under the law and the need to be stronger advocates for their children and schools,” said California State PTA Vice President for Education Patty Scripter.
Scripter and California State PTA Director of Legislation Kathy Moffat accepted the recognition at the National PTA Legislative Conference in Arlington last night on March 11.
“As with all our advocacy, our work on this issue was a true team effort to help all California kids and families,” said Moffat. “Parents, teachers and many other concerned community members joined together to ensure families have a seat at the table when it comes to decisions that will affect our children, our schools and – ultimately – our state.”
“California State PTA exemplifies what it means to speak up and take action, and its efforts have truly made a difference for education and the lives and futures of our nation’s children,” said National PTA President Otha Thornton.

Encourage them to unleash their creative talents and create artwork to be entered into the Reflections Art Program!

 

Reflections Program-Introduction

 PTA’s national Reflections Art Program has brought the arts to life for more than 10 million students since 1969. And California State PTA and its members, families and kids are on the forefront of this amazing program, which increases community awareness of the importance of arts in education.

Reflections encourages students of all ages to:

Unleash creative talents and be inspired

• Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
• Experience the fun and joy of making art
• Tap into critical-thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
• Receive positive recognition for their original works of art.

PARTICIPATION IS EASY, EXCITING AND EMPOWERING

All students attending PTA schools sponsoring the program are invited to participate and submit original artwork in one of six areas:

• Dance/choreography
• Literature
• Photography
• Film production
• Music composition
• Visual arts.

Artworks are submitted first to school-level PTAs, where they are first recognized, celebrated and judged by five grade-level divisions, while a non-judged Special Artists division celebrates student artists with special needs. School PTAs then choose a selection of entries to be judged by local PTA units, which are then sent on to councils and then districts for consideration. The final artworks submitted to California State PTA by districts are then considered for Awards of Excellence or Awards of Merit. Award of Excellence entries then go on to represent California in the final National PTA judging round. State-level Award of Excellence honorees receive:

• The opportunity to showcase their artwork at the California State PTA Convention
• Prizes including an Award of Excellence medal, certificate and a $100 savings bond presented on stage at convention
• An expense-paid trip for the award-winning student and one parent/guardian to convention.

National-level Award of Excellence honorees are recognized at the National PTA Convention, plus their artworks are featured in Reflections’ popular traveling national exhibit.

WE NEED THEMES!

But the art can’t start without an annual theme, and we need your help: Children and youth can submit a national theme to serve as the inspiration for Reflections artists and their original works. Students submitting the winning theme receive $100 and recognition at the National PTA Convention.

MARCH MALE MADNESS

New Membership Challenge to Engage More Men in PTA

When 16 new male members join our PTSA between March 1-31, our PTSA can qualify to win $500 to support the programs and services our students and school community values most.

Here’s the deal:

Sixteen new male members must join our PTSA between March 1-31

Each qualifying PTA unit that meets all criteria will be entered into a drawing for $500. The winning PTA will be drawn on stage at the 2015 California State PTA Annual Convention held from April 30-May 3 in Sacramento.

We will have a table at Open House on March 9, 2015 to accept new memberships, so if a male in your family has not joined EDHS PTSA we are asking for their support to become a member of El Diamante High School PTSA.  Please join us on Open House and when you become a member male or female you will get a chance to spin our wheel and win a prize. 

Anyone can join PTSA- dads, moms, grandfathers, grandmothers, sons, daughters, uncles, aunts, teachers, community members, and business's.  If you will not be attending Open House please feel free to email me at rodartefamily@comcast.net and I would be more than happy to send you a membership envelope or you may pick one up in the front office.
