PTA’s Reflections Art Program brings art to life across the nation
Four decades. Ten million students. And you!
REFLECTIONS: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ARTS
“What Is Your Story?”
That’s the theme for the 2016-17 Reflections Art Program which has been bringing the arts to life for more than 10 million students since 1969. And California State PTA and its members, families and kids are on the forefront of this amazing program, which increases community awareness of the importance of arts in education.Reflections encourages students of all ages to:
- Unleash creative talents and be inspired
- Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
- Experience the fun and joy of making art
- Tap into critical-thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
- Receive positive recognition for their original works of art.
PARTICIPATION IS EASY, EXCITING AND EMPOWERING
All students attending PTA schools sponsoring the program are invited to participate and submit original artwork in one of six areas:
- Dance/choreography
- Literature
- Photography
- Film production
- Music composition
- Visual arts.
Artworks are submitted first to school-level PTAs, where they are first recognized, celebrated and judged by five grade-level divisions, while a non-judged Special Artists division celebrates student artists with special needs. School PTAs then choose a selection of entries to be judged by local PTA units, which are then sent on to councils and then districts for consideration. The final artworks submitted to California State PTA by districts are then considered for Awards of Excellence or Awards of Merit. Award of Excellence entries then go on to represent California in the final National PTA judging round. Please review general entry rules.
State-level Award of Excellence honorees receive:
- The opportunity to showcase their artwork at the California State PTA Convention
- Prizes including an Award of Excellence medal, certificate and a $100 savings bond presented on stage at convention
- An expense-paid trip for the award-winning student and one parent/guardian to convention.
State-level winners were recognized at the 2016 California State PTA Annual Convention and will be posted online soon. National-level Award of Excellence honorees are recognized at the National PTA Convention, plus their artworks are featured in Reflections’ popular traveling national exhibit. See the list of National winners.
Students get a head start this summer and start creating your artwork.

CONGRATULATIONS!
The Reflections Winners for the 2015-2016 El Diamante High School Reflections Arts Program received their awards today at a PTSA ceremony held in the career center at lunch time.
California State PTA believes all children deserve a quality arts education. We encourage students to pursue artistic expression through participation in National PTA’s Reflections Art Program.
Since 1969, the Reflections Program has encouraged millions of students from throughout California and across the nation to create works of art. At PTA schools in California, 46,327 students participated in this year’s program.
The Reflections Program provides a venue for students to create and be recognized for original works of art based on a student inspired pre-selected theme. It also serves to increase community awareness of how important arts is in education. This year’s theme was, “Let Your Imagination Fly".

Court rules against releasing CDE CALPADS database
In a welcome step in the right direction, Federal Judge Kimberley Mueller ruled that the California Department of Education (CDE) will not have to release its largest database — called the “California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System” or “CALPADS” — which contains the most sensitive, personal and vulnerable information on California’s current and former public-school students.
The order does not address the type of information CDE can or cannot release if requested by the plaintiffs or whether any of that information can be redacted. The judge’s decision was supported by all parties who will be working together over the next month to determine a process.
While California State PTA is not a party to these legal proceedings, the organization is on record calling for a balance of data with privacy. We will keep you updated with any further information regarding these legal proceedings.
COURT RECEIVES ‘VOLUMINOUS’ NUMBERS OF OBJECTION FORMS
At the related hearing, Judge Mueller noted she has received “voluminous” numbers of objection forms from parents and students concerned about the possible release of personal information. While the forms are not opt-out forms and will not be considered by the court as such, she emphasized that the objection forms reinforced the need to protect students’ information. Concerned parents and students who attend or attended California public schools since Jan. 1, 2008, may still submit forms. Objection forms will be accepted until April 1. Forms received will be included in the court’s official documentation.
Objection Forms Accepted Until April 1
UPDATE: SEND THE ONE FORM PER STUDENT ONLY TO THE COURT
Follow these step-by-step instructions to complete the Objection to Disclosure of Student Information and Records:
1. Download the form — available in English and Spanish:
2. Mail the completed form, one for each student, exactly as required to:

WHAT CALIFORNIA STATE PTA IS DOING
It’s hard to fathom that a judge would allow such an overexposure of children’s information. While California State PTA is not part of the court ruling, we are exploring other avenues to delay, reduce or possibly reverse the release of so much of our children’s personal information. California State PTA has a long history of protecting and upholding students’ privacy rights, and today is no different. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more- Read our media statement at capta.org
MORE INFORMATION
In April 2012, the Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association and the Concerned Parent Association filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Education (CDE) alleging non-compliance by local education agencies with special education laws. The suit also alleges the CDE fails to monitor, investigate and correct such non-compliance in accordance with the law.
While this lawsuit called for students’ general demographic information, a federal court has just ruled that CDE must release all data — even including names and Social Security numbers — it has collected on general and special education students since Jan. 1, 2008 – more than 10 million students.
